Gainsborough Stables, Hamilton Road, Newmarket
FALL and RISE
Across the road and a hundred yards or so from Red House Stables is Gainsborough Stables. Built in the 1980s and originally Oak Stables it was home to trainers Michael Albina and Olivier Douieb. When Monsieur Douieb returned to his native France, Maktoum al Maktoum put the ill-fated Alex Scott in charge. After the latter's untimely demise, Ed Dunlop took up the reins. Sheikh Mohammed then took possession of the property when his elder brother died and at the end of 2008, Ed Dunlop relocated to the 'Bury Side' of Newmarket. So what of the remaining property? In its time it has housed some notable equine inmates including Cadeaux Genereux, Possessive Dancer, Lammtarra, Sheikh Albadou and more recently, the great Ouija Board. Demolition began this week and what has been a familiar sight to anyone using the Hamilton Road for the last 30 plus years is being savagely obliterated.
