Monday 6th October:

Text Box: Cold and frosty this morning. Shorter days and long, dark nights. We’re ok, though! We’ve got a GENERATOR to keep us warm.

Tuesday 7th October: Opening day of the Tattersalls yearling sales. This is the 'posh' sale, Book 1. It was once the Highflyer, the Houghton and even  Part 1 but now it'd the American way and has to be Book 1. Anyway, a deputation was sent to view the half sister by Giant's Causeway to our own DEADLY SILENCE, a lovely individual but beyond reasonable reach at a lofty tag of 105,000 guineas. It appears she may be on her way to France, where her mother raced.

Wednesday 8th October: SILENT APPLAUSE is given an entry in a 10 furlong 61-75 handicap at Leicester next Tuesday. Requirements include no rain and the non-participation of a fair number ahead of him in the dauntingly long list of fellow entrants!

Thursday 9th October: More strong trade in the ring at Tattersalls. FLIGHT OF FASHION'S half sister by Galileo is bought in at 120,000 guineas. Makes the 3 year old model look decidedly cheap!

Monday 13th October:

Despite more than a little pessimism, SILENT APPLAUSE does indeed squeeze into the 5.10 race at Leicester tomorrow. Now we wait and see whether the weather behaves itself or not! Joe Fanning is booked and the draw,12, looks favourable.

Book 2 of the Tattersalls yearling sales springs into action today and we are delighted to see that the first foal of SCARLETT ROSE , a full-sister to the SILENT APPLAUSE, makes 50,000 guineas. He is an attractive son of first season stallion Starcraft. Knocked down to Willie Browne, he may well return next year as a Breeze Up horse.

Wednesday 15th October: It has to be a matter of where to start! Off we went to Leicester with SILENT APPLAUSE. He is a gentleman to take racing. He travels well, looks well, behaves well and,  almost invariably, runs well. Yesterday was no exception. The weather teased us. There were lowering clouds and an attempt at rain. We ignored it and it went away. Race time arrived and, with jockey Joe Fanning on board, we employed some different tactics with the horse. Bowl along at the head of affairs, keep out of trouble and maybe, just maybe, come home in front. And we were so close to pulling it off, engulfed well into the final furlong and beaten an expensive nose for third. So the each way shrewdies collected, the jockey was very positive and the horse has now been in the money 11 times in his 18 starts. Only one more thing required on his equine CV then: that elusive win.

Tuesday 21st October: An entry for LADY ANGELICA next Monday means a possible return to Leicester for the Red House team. She is down to contest a 7 furlong nursery.

Wednesday 22nd October: Ditto....this time it's at Yarmouth that LADY ANGELICA has her entry next Tuesday.

Friday 24th October: Kempton beckons next Wednesday evening for FLIGHT OF FASHION. It'll be first time on the all-weather and first time under floodlights for this daughter of Hawk Wing.

Sunday 26th October: LADY ANGELICA misses both engagements this coming week, balloted out at Leicester and thwarted by rain at Yarmouth.

Week Beginning 27.10.08

Monday 27th October:

In these days of 48 hour declarations Monday is declaration day for Wednesday. FLIGHT OF FASHION is duly declared to run under the lights and on the polytrack at Kempton. Her early morning exercise is undertaken in unfamiliar surroundings.

Thursday 30th October: Next Wednesday may possibly see the return to the racecourse of an old friend! BOBBY CHARLES has an entry in the last at Nottingham, a 10 furlong handicap. If he does run, you'll certainly be able to 'spot the big white face' as the November gloom descends.
