Flight Of Fashion: denied the chance to run at Kempton by Godolphin hotshot so went off to Sandown instead. |
Monday 4th August:
Wednesday 6th August: SILENT APPLAUSE is declared along with 13 others in the 7.20 at Newmarket on Friday. The weather picture is unclear but a cessation of the monsoon conditions experienced on Tuesday would be nice.
Early on in the day CONTEMPLATE is put through her paces once again and work is encouraging. Later on (when you're all out of bed) PAINTED SMILE strides solo along the rubbing house polytrack.
for BIG NOISE here on Saturday but we shudder as the thunder rolls and the rain teems down during the afternoon.
LATIMER HOUSE adds two more Yarmouth entries to her portfolio, one in a handicap over an interesting 9 furlong trip and the second in a mile and a quarter claimer. Both are at next Wednesday's meeting.
Friday 8th August: Having endured near enough half an inch of rain in the previous 24 hours we deemed it madness to try and run SILENT APPLAUSE on easy ground and withdrew him accordingly!
After she was eliminated from her heat at Kempton on Wednesday (and denied the chance to take on Godolphin's $8.2 million dollar superstar), FLIGHT OF FASHION is entered in a mile fillies' maiden at Sandown next Thursday.
Sunday 10th August: Sheer guts and determination drive BIG NOISE into a gallant 4th in the big 7 furlong handicap at Newmarket yesterday. The gods did not smile on us, indeed they opened the heavens and threw the rain down turning the ground totally against this son of Lake Coniston. Beaten only a length or so by 3 soft ground horses, including the Bunbury Cup winner Little White Lie, is a tribute to a big horse with a big heart! |

Monday 18th August:
Meanwhile, if we cast our sights forwards to the weekend, FLIGHT OF FASHION may contest another mile maiden here at headquarters on Saturday, whilst SILENT APPLAUSE has an entry at Beverley the same day and at Yarmouth on Sunday.
Tuesday 19th August: DEFECTIVEDETECTIVE returns unscathed and a little wiser from his first taste of 'proper' flat racing. FLIGHT OF FASHION is given an alternative to her Newmarket entry with a possible Bank Holiday Monday gig at Warwick.
Wednesday 20th August: Next Tuesday is Chris Wotton Cup day and this year the big event moves from Lingfield to Great Leighs. It is the fifth renewal of the race sponsored in Chris's name and we feel he would have appreciated this step into the unknown. The 2008 contest is a 6 furlong novice stakes for 2 year olds and we have our own LADY ANGELICA entered.
LATIMER HOUSE is also entered at the same meeting but may miss out on a run, thwarted by a large entry.
Thursday 21st August: The geography of British racing is turned upside down as York moves here to Newmarket and further south to Newbury and Goodwood. Suddenly all sorts of things that could never be done before are being done. Things like 24 hour declarations! Red House Stables remain a small oasis of calm as FLIGHT OF FASHION is declared for HQ on Saturday, although we are unsure quite what time she'll run as more races are shoe-horned into the afternoon.
And we've caught the Great Leighs bug!! Two fillies entered yesterday and now an entry for BIG NOISE next Wednesday.
Friday 22nd August SILENT APPLAUSE is set to carry top weight in his apprentice handicap at Yarmouth on Bank Holiday Sunday. What he doesn't need is the traditional British Bank Holiday weather. And whilst on the subject of deluges, we have been submerged in fine racing today as Newmarket and Newbury absorbed the best of York. Festivals of top class racing, double figure cards at the most prestigious courses. What a great idea.
Sunday 24th August: Yesterday saw FLIGHT OF FASHION complete her third run, in a mile maiden at Newmarket and she is now eligible to contest handicaps. SILENT APPLAUSE is forced to miss his intended engagement in today's apprentice handicap at Yarmouth and LADY ANGELICA is one of the half dozen declared to contest Tuesday's Chris Wotton Cup, part of the Great Leighs three day Summer Carnival. |

Monday 25th August:
Tuesday 26th August: Chris Wotton Cup day at Great Leighs and what an experience! All of us were debutants at the track, including LADY ANGELICA, our runner in the race, and we were all a bit bemused by it The filly found herself a bit thrown out (literally) by the bends and it took the rest of us a while to get our bearings. However, we were looked after royally by everyone there and felt that Chris would have appreciated his day.
FLIGHT OF FASHION is allotted a handicap mark of 55 and is duly entered in a 0-55 classified stakes at Kempton next Monday.
Wednesday 27th August: BIG NOISE'S turn to try out Great Leighs today and what a race he ran AGAIN and how frustrating to be beaten into second by a horse of Luca Cumani's that had been absent from the track for the last 488 days. Why didn't he wait at least 489 days before releasing him back into the racing world? It seems our boy did get the mile although his cornering was a little dubious.
Thursday 28th August: Both runners who boldly went where no Red House runners had gone before have returned from Great Leighs in good order and we have had a day to reflect upon the experience!
Friday 29th August: CONTEMPLATE has her first look at the practice starting stalls and does very well, progressing as far as entering a closed stall and trotting out. (See our feature on starting stalls above for more information). She was chaperoned by BOBBY CHARLES who was extremely badly behaved and he was only watching!
Saturday 30th August: We decide against taking FLIGHT OF FASHION to Kempton on Monday and give her an alternative entry on the all weather at Lingfield next Friday. |
