Something for the Weekend

by the Spotter

ONCE AGAIN our attention turns to Cheltenham for another day of bumper action and another big handicap chase in the form of the Boylesports.com Gold Cup.  It seems as if Paul Nicholls is unbeatable in the feature races at the moment and he looks to have a very strong hand once again in the shape of New Little Brick, a Grade One Novice chase winner last year.  However I’m going to take a chance on a horse that invariably runs well in big handicap chases around Cheltenham and hopefully one will finally come his way this time around.  Knowhere is a horse that we’ve all seen, including the handicapper, but he tends to save his best efforts for Cheltenham as shown with his placed efforts in this race last year and this season’s Paddy Power Gold Cup.  If his jumping stands up he could reward each-way backers at a decent price.  If the Boylesports wasn’t enough then the next race on the card is the Boylesports International Hurdle, a major trial for the Champion Hurdle.  Won by the ill-fated Detroit City last year it’s another fantastic battle that sees the return of the current champion Sublimity.  He’s opposed by the plucky Katchit, previous festival winners Penzance and Desert Quest along with Straw Bear, Afsoun and multiple Grade One winner Macs Joy.  This is with no doubt a fantastic race and should be viewed as so and it may fall the way of course specialist Katchit.  He may have been defeated last time out but he still ran with great credit and this will be his acid test to whether he’s a true Champion Hurdle prospect.  This race will be won by a very good horse regardless but Alan King’s four time course and distance winner can come out on top of the lot.
