Something for the Weekend

by the Spotter

ARGUABLY the best single day's racing in England happens this weekend as Newmarket hosts its Champions Day fixture.  The card features two Group Ones along with any four other high quality events, including the 2m2f marathon, the Cesarewitch.  The first of the two aforementioned Group Ones is the Darley Dewhurst Stakes for two-year-olds over 7f.  This potentially sees the clash between the best two-year-old colts seen this season and will almost certainly decide which of them is crowned champion.  The Irish invader New Approach is the warm favourite to follow in the footsteps of last year's outstanding juvenile Teofilo but if the ground dries sufficiently he’s in serious danger of losing his unbeaten tag to the imperious Solario Stakes winner Raven’s Pass.  The American bred son of Elusive Quality made mincemeat of his rivals at Sandown and could be very good.  Dark Angel is a battler so I doubt he would quite be up to scratch and Rio de la Plata needs the ground to dry markedly for his turn of foot to be effective. The second leg of the autumn double is the Totesport Cesarewitch.  A prize that is regularly targeted by the jumps trainers, this year is no exception with Phillip Hobbs’s Fair Along towards the head of affairs.  Strange as it may seem, for a race over such a long distance, the draw has a massive effect on proceedings with high drawn horses winning every year since 1998.  One such horse is Macorville who ran a blinder when fourth in the Irish St Leger last time out and is, therefore, officially 16lbs “well-in”.  A horse that relishes softer going he deserves a big race like this having run consistently well all season including when beaten the shortest of short-heads in the Northumberland Plate.
