Something for the Weekend

by the Spotter

The final day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting tops the bill this weekend featuring the Stewards Cup and the Nassau Stakes, both sponsored by Blue Square.  Last year’s Nassau, over 10f for Fillies and Mares, produced the finish of the meeting as Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun fought tooth and nail for victory with Lord Derby’s mare eventually prevailing. These two heroines have moved on but nevertheless a top-notch field has turned up to contest this event.  They include Oaks winners Light Shift and Peeping Fawn as well as last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner Speciosa.  Add to this Group One winners Mandesha and Nannina and the mouth waters.  Any one of these fillies could be capable of landing this prize but Mandesha might just have that extra little bit of class to score.  Runner-up in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last time, when missing the break and getting a rough ride round, she had previously shown great form when triumphing in the Prix Corrida on her reappearance and in the Prix de L’Opera on Arc day.  Back against her own sex she should give a decent account of herself.  The 167th running of the Stewards Cup is the other feature on the card.  Twenty-eight runners go to post in this 6f dash won last year by Borderlescott.  Hughie Morrison has had an excellent time of things with his sprinters this term and it could pay to stick with Intrepid Jack finally to land a major prize.  A horse with mountains of ability but seemingly caverns of bad luck he’d been runner up in all three starts (including the Wokingham) before flopping at Newmarket.  The 7f trip may have caught him out that day and jockey John Egan is capable of success in big races, as he has shown in the past on the likes of Mudawin, Admiral and more appropriately Les Arcs and Pastoral Pursuits.  Once the main meeting of the day has finished it could be worth casting an eye down to Lingfield for the 7.00, a Median Auction Maiden for two-year-olds over 71/2f.  Al Muheer is capable of breaking his duck here having shown a superior level of form already in finishing 2nd in a listed event at Sandown and a Nursery at Newmarket’s July Meeting.  Championship seeking Seb Sanders can only benefit this horse’s chances.
