Something for the Weekend

by the Spotter

IT'S ONE of the best racing weekends of the year this week with top class action on both sides of the Channel.  Newmarket’s annual cavalry charge, more commonly known as the Cambridgeshire, is run at the Rowley Mile with any number of possible winners.  John Gosden’s Pipedreamer is a warm order to follow in the footsteps of Halling (another Gosden trained winner of the Cambridgeshire) but the regally bred Greek Well may be the answer.  A one-time Derby favourite he has shown improved form since the addition of a visor, winning at York and running placed in the John Smith’s Stakes at Newbury.  Furthermore, he has the services of the departing champion jockey, Ryan Moore, which can only benefit him.  Lastly he’s officially 3lb “well-in” and would appear to be on the “right side” of the track.  A placed effort should be expected, at the least, if running up to form.  The preceding event is the 8f Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes, won last year by Spinning Queen, who subsequently went on to be sold for 3.5million guineas.  It’s a tough contest this time around and the answer to the winner might be last year’s 1,000 Guineas heroine Speciosa.  A filly with a fine record at this track (three wins and a second from four runs) she only lost her unbeaten record here when going down to Manduro in April and we all know what he went on to achieve!  Not at her best in the Nassau, she had previously been a good second to Peeping Fawn in the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh.  The autumn can be a tricky time with fillies but there won’t be a person who doesn’t cheer her in should she triumph.  Across the water at Longchamp under-appreciated first day of the Arc meeting gets underway.  The Group One feature is the 7f Prix de la Foret.  Jersey Stakes winner Tariq should bag the first Group One for connections before the big day on Sunday.  A horse who was mightily impressive over this trip on his latest start he must win providing the ground doesn’t scupper his chances.  Sunday sees, probably, the premier day of racing in Europe of the season.  Six Group One races with the undoubted feature being the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.  It should give the opportunity for the majestic Derby winner Authorized to cap his career with the World’s best all aged middle distance prize.  Soft ground doesn’t present a problem so the evens favourite should oblige.  Of the other races Yeats looks good to supplement his Classic victory with another Group One in the Prix du Cadran.
