Something for the Weekend |

LAST WEEK it was the Derby
and next week it’s Royal Ascot but in between we have more than enough
good action to keep us all satisfied.
Down at Sandown the feature race is the five-furlong Scurry Stakes
for three year olds. This
features some really interesting sorts and my selection is the most
interesting (and least original) of the lot.
Corrybrough looks
like a sprinter of serious potential, judged on the way he won his last
race at Beverley just under three weeks ago.
Looking outpaced and too far back to mount any challenge of note he
picked up exceptionally well and won a shade cosily by
two-and-a-half-lengths. The
form wouldn’t be overly strong but he could only beat what was put in
front of him and he did it with consummate ease. His trainer Henry Candy handled Corrybrough’s father
Kyllachy with similar adeptness and don’t be surprised if you see this
individual competing in the top sprint races towards the end of the
season. Elsewhere up at York
it’s Timeform Charity Day featuring a heritage sprint handicap for three
year olds. This competitive
race fell victim to last summer’s atrocious weather but a maximum field
of 20 are set to line up this time around.
One of the major pieces of form for this race was a similar
handicap at Newmarket at the end of May won by the Michael Jarvis-trained
Ancien Regime. He is set to
carry a hefty weight in this race and it could be worth siding with the
horse that came third that day, Prohibit.
He had shown good form to finish third behind the classy Sir Gerry
at Ascot in a Listed race before Newmarket and wasn’t disgraced in a
similar contest after Newmarket. He
receives a six-pound pull for a two-length defeat by Ancien Regime and I
can see him going close from a decent draw. Selections – 3.25 York, 5 Prohibit 3.40 Sandown, 2 Corrybrough |
