Something for the Weekend

by the Spotter

This Saturday sees the return of the Epsom Derby winner Authorized in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown.  Peter Chapple-Hyam’s charge is bidding to become the first horse to win the Derby and Eclipse in the same season since the champion Nashwan in 1989 and in my opinion is highly likely to succeed.  Unlike recent Derby winners Authorized appears to be an extremely talented individual and with the soft ground likely to inhibit chief market rival George Washington, it should be another major prize scooped by connections.  However at 1-2 you won’t be getting rich betting on Frankie and co. so my selections lie elsewhere.  The second is the Tote Scoop6 stakes and Luca Cumani’s Pride of Nation looks a solid choice.  A 6th place finish over 7F in the Britannia at Royal Ascot last time looks useful, especially with second placed finisher Fajr running a close 3rd in the Criterion at Newmarket last week.  Proven on soft going and from a yard that knows what it takes to land a major prize he should be a popular choice.  Following the Eclipse is the Addleshaw Goddard, a listed race for fillies over a mile. Australian Hugh Bowman has been in flying form since his arrival earlier this year and it pays to stick with his and Mick Channon’s Treat in this event.  A useful juvenile who was runner up in the Fillies’ Mile, she has shown decent form over a mile in both the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas.  Disappointing over 10F last time the return to the mile should be ideal and being by Barathea the going should hold no fears.

Selection:  2.35 Sandown – Pride of Nation
